Dynasty Painting

Journal entry... Taipei, Taiwan 2012: I could easily have spent more time outside the National Gallery photographing their koi ponds than in the magnificent museum. The dancing light and rippling water transformed the koi into a live work of art. I had the honor of traveling through Taiwan. I was entranced by the koi ponds at the National Gallery Museum in Taipei. I took close to 100 photos as reference for my paintings. "Dynasty" is painted on layers of silver leaf on canvas. The koi fish swim through the magical abstract space. There is a sense of unexpected depth with fish size varying from foreground to background. They have palette knife detailing. The thick oil paint of the foreground koi contrasts nicely with the smoothness of the silver leaf and fading fish shadows. The painting comes to life, sparkling in the light and changing with varying light throughout the day. "Dynasty" is wired to hang with a single nail. All sides are painted. No framing is needed.
