About The Artwork

One of Robert Dunt's "Electricity Paintings". These painting deal with colour and space. Robert is endeavouring to push simple colour combinations to their absolute limit. Working in a similar sphere to the pointillists he wants the colours to mix in the eye of the viewer. He is also working within the premise that colour is actually space. As the viewer looks the two colours wrestle with each other in space. Sometimes the 'background' colour appears to hover in front of the 'foreground' colour. While inherently abstract these paintings reference many things we see in the real world, such as wheatfields, rain dripping down windows or light flickering on water. One of the pleasures of these paintings is the way they constantly change as light strikes them at different times of day, a beauty inherent to real oil paintings. The paintings open up new visual experiences and intensify the visual acuity of people who look at them and live with them. The aim is to make something poetic and intelligent from very simple ingredients.

Robert Dunt is a London based artist known for his colourful abstract paintings and representational prints. He graduated from City & Guilds of London Art School (2004) with First Class honours. His abstract works are inspired by music, in particular The Jesus and Mary Chain, and feature his trademark black and white "Distortion Forms" which are a visual metaphor for noise and distortion. His prints begin from original drawings which are then combined with original photos or coloured with flat planes of colour. Many of the prints are inspired by Picasso's Vollard Suite and seek to make poetic comments about the process of reproducing what we see in the world as art. He has exhibited nationally and internationally. His Solo Shows include: The Distortion Form Paintings at LMP, London, (2017) Open House, London (2017) - Madonnas and Housemasters, Charterhouse School (2015), Break on Through, Waterloo Gallery (2004) and I Wanna Trip You Up, Covent Garden (2004). Selected group exhibitions include Alien Beauty, Vyner Street; Fun House, The Empire Bethnal Green; ArtTop10 Presents… , The Menier Gallery; Print Jam 2014, Art Bermondsey; Type 36, The Type Museum; Circus, The Empire Bethnal Green. He has been selected for the ING Discerning Eye, the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, NEAC, and the Singer & Friedlander/Sunday Times Watercolour Competition. He featured in a TV advert for TD Trading airing on Sky News. His work is held in numerous private collections. He is the Founder of the art review website and YouTube channel ArtTop10.com.
