In 2016, I was diagnosed with endometrial hyperplasia. This series of works references microscopic images I took of my uterus. I love the way they can be interpretted as microscopic images or aerial views of ladscapes. The process of creating these pieces was meditative. The small strokes of graphite are a nod to Renaissance drawings (I trained classically and love Leonardo DaVinci), but also reference cilia in the body that push germs out and also sea grass along the shore. I left the natural wood exposed and added limited color to evoke a sense of calm. The painting extends to the sides. This piece should not be framed. It is ready to hang on a simple nail. This is two of seven pieces that fit together side by side. This was the first piece I made in the series. On the night of my mother's birthday party, it was hanging on a wall. I asked my Uncle Ray what he saw and he said he saw a tree. Later that night, after he left our house, he drove to the end of the development, put his car in park and left this world.
