Born at a Military hospital in Louth, Lincolnshire. The youngest son of three sons of Polish refugees who, amongst thousands of Polish families, were granted citizenship in Great Britain at the end of the second world war and housed in an RAF camp near Sutton on the Forest, just outside the beautiful City of York, North Yorkshiire. The first 12 years of my life were spent in this strange polish environment yet in the heart of the most beautiful Yorkshire countryside. The camp was one of several locations used to house post war refugee families with a view to rehouse and integrate these families into the larger community. The Polish people despite their poverty, were extremely industrial, versatile, tolerant and committed Roman Catholics. All were the survivors of the horrors of war, many had suffered dreadfull torture in death & concentration camps at the hands of the Germans & Russians, many carrying around visible wounds and loss of limbs, many had lost all or some brothers & sisters, their children, mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, and the list goes on. All had lost their property and belongings, with no hope of ever returning to their homes!
Death at the RAF camp was a regular occurance, the open expression of grief and sorrow at a funeral had etched its energy & mystery in my young & impressionable mind for ever!
The community revolved around the Roman Catholic Holy Calendar and around the activity of the Roman Catholic Church in the camp which was headed by the wonderful Polish priest, who also a survivor of the war camps. This committed belief in God by the Polish community and in particular that of my mother, introduced me to the life of Jesus Christ, the perfect example, the single most contributory inspiration for my Art Project. Although my young life is one of sadness and distraction away from my Art project, nevertheless I continue with my search to try to understand why we are here, what is it all for, why did God design us (if he/she did) and design us and then let us struggle, what happens when we die? Is there such a thing as reincarnation, and how? How did life start, what was the beginning life? In the beginning, through conception and the beauty of the human body. Is outer space in fact inner space or both, the further we travel into space is actually travelling into our own inner space.
