"Entanglement 35 (back to the well)" This is a small painting done in watercolor and ink on 140 pound hot press paper. It is part of my Entanglement series which explores relationships between color and line and is defined by interconnected tangles of lines throughout the composition. This is an example of a "calm center" composition in which most of the action in the painting is around the perimeter and the center is relatively calm. I started this painting with a series of watercolor washes which I allow to only partially dry before applying a thin, uneven layer of white ink to achieve a ghostly, faded look. While this is still wet I apply successive layers of bright and dark saturated pigment based inks straight from the ink droppers. I use the droppers both to apply the ink and to push it around scratching into the previous layers. I encourage the inks to interact with each other, mixing on the paper and pushing into the watercolor layer beneath them. The final step for this painting was the application of white bursts of ink into pools of wet ink. The white ink sinks under the other pigments around the edges of the white spots to really bring the color out. This painting is framed in an 18 x 24 inch 1 1/2 inch deep natural wood frame with a neutral grey mat. Please note that this painting is currently on display as part of my solo show at the Landau Gallery in Belmont, MA and will not be available to ship until the show ends on October 11, 2013.
