Climate Change has already had observable effects on the environment. Shrinking glaciers, melting Arctic ice, early break-up of river and lake ice, shifting plant and animal ranges, and early flowering trees are all signs that uncontrollable Climate Change is occurring. Research shows that changes in climate, especially earlier snowmelt due to warming of spring and summer, have led to hot and dry conditions that boost the fire activity in some areas. Climate Change is the defining issue of our time and we are at a crucial moment. This is NOT a distant threat, it is happening now!

These abstract expressionist paintings depict the catastrophic impact on our planet that our leaders are not taking seriously. I want to viewer to think about global warming and its devastating impact on our planet. But, I also want the viewer to be aware that we can head off some of these changes.

I create many layers with palette knives and brushes, and pouring paint on the canvas. Over many days or weeks, I turn the painting many times and paint it in several directions until the painting emerges. I use the warm colors of orange and red symbolizing heat and fire, contrasting with the cool colors of blue and white symbolizing water and ice.

About The Artwork

In the realm of Climate Change, the United Nations has made a sobering declaration: “The ocean has borne the brunt of the consequences of human-made global warming.” Since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, our atmosphere has seen a staggering 35% surge in carbon dioxide levels, a consequence primarily attributed to the relentless burning of fossil fuels. The oceans, acting as the Earth’s paramount carbon sink, have absorbed the excess heat stemming from greenhouse gases, bearing witness to a startling truth: 90% of the warming of the last five decades has been soaked up by these vast depths. In my art series, I’ve chosen a palette of orange, blue, white, and red to convey this pressing message. I begin by constructing layers using palette knives and brushes, carefully pouring paints onto the canvas to create horizontal lines. After each layer, I allow the painting to breathe, returning to it with a fresh perspective. I pivot the canvas, shifting my strokes in multiple directions over days or weeks until the painting’s essence emerges. Through these colors and the rhythmic process, I implore the viewer to contemplate the grave reality of global warming and its devastating consequences. Yet, I also seek to kindle a spark of hope within, a realization that we hold the power to halt the catastrophic impacts, to heal our oceans, and ultimately, our shared world. Thoreau once said: "NATURE is beautiful only as a place where a life is to be lived. It is not beautiful to him who has not resolved on a beautiful life." Thoreau’s quote unquestionably resonates with me. I too, wish to address the beautiful in NATURE and celebrate it's absolute wildness, innate freedom, and infinite strength. I look at NATURE with painter’s sensitivity and scientist’s eye. Through my art, I honor Nature by expressing it’s many riches, including mountains, sea coasts, sunsets, thunderclouds, and trees. I worship the environment we inhabit, but mourn its gradual destruction. I am richest when I use NATURE as my inspiration and poorer when I depict its destruction by Climate Change. When I am about to begin a painting, I become deeply reflective and in touch with the powerful emotions that NATURE instills in me. As the painting develops, these inspirations evolve into the raw elements of form, shape, contrast, color and texture. Upon completion, these all come together to create an incredibly powerful and cohesive statement. In my artwork I warn against the ecological poverty of that we are creating. We cannot continue to bulldoze the landscape, to pollute the air, and to ravage and exploit the NATURE with impunity. I want people to be in awe of NATURE and to take action to stop the Earth from becoming a barren wasteland!
