About The Artwork

Named “Aoraki” by South Island Maori iwi (tribe) Ngai Tahu/Mount Cook is an iconic South Island NZ landmark and its claim to fame is being the highest mountain in NZ. Although I’m from the North Island, we always spent May school holidays in the South Island and I have such incredible memories of the journeys we used to take to visit my mums family. I painted Aoraki/Mount Cook not long after I lost my mum. It seemed to represent for me the shear size of grief that I was feeling at the time, and how enormous it felt. For anyone who’s gone through losing someone so important and struggling with grief I hope this painting is a reminder that it can feel huge but it is not insurmountable. Although the mountain has snow, I used pink tones in the hills to show warmth from others. The turquoise blue of the water to represent hope. My favourite part of this painting is the mark making to represent the depths and rises of the mountains. This artwork requires framing. I suggest an oak frame to highlight the warmth of the pinks in the mountains. Acrylic on stretched canvas, ready to hang. Signed on the front. Vanished Satin.

I am a self-taught abstract artist. Much of the colour and subject matter in my art references my own experiences and emotions around stunning landscapes in NZ where I was born and Australia where I now live. I have been a TV Producer for over 20 years, working for overseas TV networks and Australian broadcasters. I am also a casting director for award winning reality and factual shows. As a child, and right through my 20's, 30's and 40's I have loved to paint and create, but it wasn’t until two years ago that I painted really consistently after the loss of my mother. It was the driving force in finding an outlet and a way to work through the grief. I love to use acrylic, concentrating on bright, bold colour combinations – challenging the idea of traditional colour in everyday scenery and incorporating big loose brush strokes to allow a sense of movement. I am motivated to make my mum proud and to bring joy to someone’s day with my pieces of art.
