Made towards the end of a days painting in my studio in Penzance. I found a cardboard background that had become crazed with oil paint after being left in the sun and dried too quickly. I liked the way that the abstracted feathers stood out against the dark green and black back painting. Alizarin red looks astonishing contrasted with black and it seemed to work well. I wasn't happy with the eyes though and after some months I modified them to become a bit more fierce, whereas before they had been a bit comical 'surprised'. Owls are in folk lore considered to be wise, we project this idea upon them. I like to think they are what they are an animal living in the moment and mostly hunting for voles. If you asked a vole about owls, they would I'm sure say that they were fierce, but that is my projection too. I have framed this painting in a dark found frame, there is no glass and it is signed on the back. Would make a great gift for someone wise or fierce or alive.
