Depicted here is Lachlan Macquarie who served as the fifth and final autocratic Governor of New South Wales from 1810 to 1821. Macquarie’s Aboriginal policy consisted of nominating a tribe leader and identifying them by enforcing a brass breast-plate to be worn inscribed with name and title. This often did not reflect the status of elders within the tribes and most of the breast-plates contained offensive names.
