Gaze at Sunset / Mirada al atardecer Painting

This painting was one of my first significant challenges. I sat in front of the blank canvas for a long time until I began with an idea from which only the red curtains, the window, and the girl remain. Although these latter two changed their position and posture, the initial, somewhat imposed idea faded away when, among them, I saw what I really needed to paint. The late hours of the afternoon have always fascinated me—an instant that reminds us that time is passing, that another day is dying, a day that will never return. But, at the same time, in that ephemeral moment, it seems eternal, like a neutral point. It's not dark and cold like the night, nor bright and bustling like the day, but it has that nostalgic aspect that is almost impossible to find on a sunny day. So, I painted a distant, somewhat unreal sunset, a sunset that bathes the world in yellow but is closer to night than day. The sun doesn't reach her, the unnamed woman whose face we haven't seen, so she has to resign herself to letting it go. Because we, in our limited human nature, have to resign ourselves to the forces of nature that we can never bend to our desires and needs. Both you and I are unaware of who the girl sitting in that window is. Perhaps she reminds us of someone familiar, a friend we've almost forgotten, but we can't walk up to her, touch her shoulder, and ask if the same thoughts pass through her mind as ours. We both observe her from the same angle: you as a spectator, whom I can hardly ask what you think while looking at my work, and me as an artist who has tried this afternoon to summarize in a few lines the moment I've tried to capture in this painting. A fleeting moment that art allows me to steal from time and reality, freezing forever a gaze at sunset.
