Canvas was inspired by the phrase of Virgil : "Equo ne credite, Teucri. Quidquid id est, timeo Danaos et dona ferentes" (in English "Do not trust the horse, Trojans! Whatever it is, I fear the Danaans, even when bringing gifts."). Within the text around the image the word horse ("Equo") is replaced by the word of the ship ("Navi"). The Aeneid is a Latin epic poem, written by Virgil between 29 and 19 BC.
