Girls Say Hello to Gerhard Richter (no.8) Painting

'Girls Say Hello to Gerhard Richter' is my response to Gerhard Richter's '48 Portraits' series (1971-78). I first encountered Richter's series in De Pont, a museum in Tilburg, the Netherlands some years ago. I was really impressed by these paintings: there are magically (photo-)realistic, dreamy, absolutely stunning, and I could not take my eyes off them. They are really works of master. I was in love with these paintings. That's no doubt about it. But I also felt the uneasiness in me. All the subjects in this series are men. Important men (photos taken from encyclopedia). Seriously looking. White. I remember Richter's series were hanged much higher than eye levels, and the size was quite larger than life. Visitors had to literally "look up" to the portraits. One has to look up and admire. The uneasiness rumbles in me for a long time. And when I started to paint my own series 'Girls Say Hello to Gerhard Richter', I meant it not just as a dialogue but a way to iron out my own feelings -- a little rebellion against the grand master. And so I painted girls who are expressive, who are famous in an alternative way, who are Asian, and the colors are pastel instead of cold black and white.
