I found a photograph of a proboscis monkey and loved the gentle shy gaze of this tree dwelling monkey. I have tried to imagine it's interior life and something in his eyes said 'I am shy' to me, hence the title. The reproduction is from an book on endangered species also something close to my heart and mind. I hope that we can make space for all species in the future. I wanted to make this a portrait, not just a generic member of a species image, the restraint of my painting skills comes into play here too. Also I wanted to convey the easy going nature of many animals, for whom, just hanging out in a tree is a way of life. I have been experimenting with lighter frame mounts and I like the play of the pale blue with the greens of the foliage in the painting.This oil painting is on MDF mounted into a glassless up-cycled frame from a charity shop. It can be wall mounted and comes with a hanging wire attached.

Tim won the Ovalhouse prize at Chelsea College of Art, and Gloucester University prize at the Open West in 2015. He is a member of the committee of the Newlyn Society of Artists.
