About The Artwork

She used to be friends with pain. It took up residence in her heart, left signs of its visits in her eyes. The day she asked it to leave, it begged to stay, both of them comfortable in each others’ presence. It loved the home she’d built in her soft heart. Pain’s visits were bittersweet in their frustrating familiarity; its presence better than the vacancy it left behind. One day she made friends with peace, and she finally learned what it feels like to come home to HerSelf. ___ The Mess Collection features a visual mapping of emotions, specifically the celebration of joy, surrender & peace that results from having endured the grieving process as depicted through abstract expressionism & florals. Abstracted flower imagery along with the use of real pressed botanicals from the artist’s garden can be seen throughout this series as LaCaria explores the paradoxical symbolism behind flowers and how they’re exchanged at both time of celebration and mourning. The floral elements draw parallels between the impermanence of seasons and life chapters, the ebb and flow of time and the ephemerality of emotions. The artist aims to evoke a nostalgia in the viewer by prompting the recollection of a memory in which flowers were present, for better or for worse.

Tania LaCaria is an Italian-Canadian artist. LaCaria has traveled the world extensively, gathering inspiration from various cultures and countries where she’s lived, namely in Latin America and South East Asia. Her travels have always influenced her work in art and design and continue to be an important source of inspiration for her work. She returned to Canada and settled in Hamilton in 2016, where she currently lives and works as a full time artist. LaCaria’s work explores the concept of paradox - the idea that conflicting realities exist at the exact same time - focusing on themes based in gender, sexuality, social structure/class systems, body politics and relationships through an Abstract Expressionist aesthetic. LaCaria's interest in creating art is rooted in her mission to connect with others and build community. Her work is introspective and vulnerable as she paints about her own life experiences; but in an attempt to normalize the perceived "bad" emotions that people experience as a result of difficult life situations, LaCaria's work presents as vibrant, playful and approachable. LaCaria is represented by the Art Gallery of Hamilton in Ontario, Canada. Her work is held in private collections throughout the USA and Canada.
