About The Artwork

Please contact me and allow time for this painting to ship as I am currently in France. Mixed Media on Canvas Newsprint, Charcoal & Acrylics 30 x 40 inches This is another piece that came out a few months after I lost my house and all my possessions during the California Valley Fire disaster in Lake County on September 12th, 2015. It was birthed at a friends' house while inspired by the incredible beautifully of densely forested Humboldt County, during a particularly wet El Nino winter. The contrast that rain and greens offered after experiencing such intense summer heat, fires, ashes and desolation everywhere was very welcomed - even if a bit drastic, and almost as shocking for the system. So the title of this piece seems rather appropriate to me in its many possible interpretations... Inspired by the incredible beauty of many unique forests all over the world, I have painted and sold many of these tree paintings since 2004. The original idea of using newsprint came from an "ecological desire" to challenge myself to reuse the "free-Oakland-neighborhood" newspapers I received every week but hadn't asked for... "Returning the paper to the trees" became my humble attempt to pay homage to these magnificent "beings" that sustain our life in many ways. I may not paint trees for a while, but I seem to eventually come back to them, again and again and again... Each final painting surprises me in its utter uniqueness as if it was for the first time. Each has a particular mood and a set of colors that appeal to the imagination of a nature-lover day-dreamer like me, and hopefully like you too... Hope springs eternal (in the human breast). Prov. People will continue to hope even though they have evidence that things cannot possibly turn out the way they want. Sometimes used to remark that you believe someone's situation is hopeless. People will keep on hoping, no matter what the odds. This expression was coined by Alexander Pope (An Essay on Man, 1732) and quickly became proverbial. "Hope springs eternal in the human breast; Man never is, but always to be blessed: The soul, uneasy and confined from home, Rests and expatiates in a life to come." – Alexander Pope, An Essay on Man

In the end, my creative work is almost always about exploring the fine line that separates fantasy from daily-reality. As I seek to extract the essence of scenes and things, they inevitably start to escape my control to live a life of their own. The magic happens when I allow this process to be as it is. ... .... .... .... Raised in Provence by the Mediterranean, I moved to California when I was 25. Both places have been strong sources of inspiration which transpire through my art. - - - - - - My goal is to stir and bring forward a portion of our unconscious, be it collective or personal, and connect the viewer with their internal world of felt inner-knowing and recognition. I paint what will provide enough raw material for one to generate their own story about a place that sits at the edge of the known where fantasy begins - be it imagination or memory. I seek to do this by conveying a strong sense of atmosphere using specific color harmonies and compositions that go beyond the subject matter itself. The stories thus generated don't have to coincide because I am not looking to convey one single message or impression. I use my own perceived reality as a point of departure, but not the place of arrival. One of my rewards in this process is to hear the variety of stories and sensations people experience when viewing my art. - - - - - - Painting for me has to be mostly about process as I feel a strong pull towards "following my bliss" every step of the way. The back and forth dialogue between responding to what inspires me and what shows up on my "canvas" creates a certain sort of tension that I resolve with my self-taught technical knowledge and a desire to experiment. This exploratory way of working keeps me inspired and energized. I am inspired by a broad range of artists, styles and subject matters - with a penchant for nature and self-introspection. I am not afraid to challenge myself by taking risks, following a way of working which keeps me on my toes throughout the entire process, having to surrender to the unknown and allowing for the magic that can happen at the end.
