About The Artwork
This portfolio of ink paintings is made up of 16 works in total. They are made with oak gall ink, hand made after a renaissance formula, a mixture of oak gall acid, iron sulfate, gum arabic, and white wine. Each painting is made up of 12 horizontal stripes, painted across the surface with a soft brush. The formula for the width of the stripes as well as placement is based the digits of hexadecimal pi.

Hlynur Helgason is a visual artist who lives and works in Reykjavík, Iceland. He works with painting and photography. In his paintings, he creates a nuanced physical atmosphere out of the juxtaposition of overlays of colour fields, organised according to a particular system. He also specializes in alternative photographic techniques, handcrafting images using nineteenth-century techniques, and creating images of unsurpassed tactile quality. Hlynur's work is represented in major public collections in Iceland, at the Reykjavík Municipal Art Museum, and the National Gallery of Iceland.
