Lately I thoroughly enjoy playing with sweet colors. And in this particular painting I wanted to see if I could create a "deep black hole" (which usually is the part between the hair and the face) with only using warm, or even hot colors. And yes, it works, it creates the illusion of depth! "I always have myself to fall back upon" says enough about the leitmotif, and I hope the people who see this painting will recognize the feeling! This painting, just like any other one of mine is also painted on the sides, so unless you desire otherwise, it's ready to hang on your wall.

My name is Monique van Steen and I am dutch artist who lives and works in the beautiful city Barcelona. In my early 20's I fell in love with the Spanish life-style. 
The passionate form of living life captivated my heart, yet it was foremost the mediterranean light that seduced me. 
This light enhances all the worldy colors and this inspires me to paint with the vibrant colors my artworks are now known for. The ever moving inner feminine world is what fascinates me as an artist. I portray strong women, 
 strong in their fierceness, strong in their hopes,
yet also strong in their sensuality, in their vulnerabilities and doubts… yet always theirselves.
 My style is aligned with that, 
I speak in a visual language that is easily understood: Urban pop art. 
 The flowing outlines speak a clear message and the vibrant colors add intensity to the personality of the depicted feelings.

 The Modernist era, ever so present in Barcelona with the recurring natural and female features in the architecture and urban furniture are a traceable influence in my art,
