About The Artwork

The art of Michael Moesslang deals with why people feel, think and act the way they do. And they don’t always do it for their own good. In this painting (the first work in a small series), he has dealt with addiction. When people around you are affected by substance abuse, alcohol or drug use, you are powerless. Even when it is family members or close friends. The addict knows it’s hurting him and he continues anyway. And it gets worse and worse. Arrogant and contemptuous, the young man looks at the viewer over his cold shoulder. Pills and tablets buzz around him, as do thoughts, emotions and fantasies that have become colors, surfaces and brushstrokes.

Are you always acting right, disciplined and logical? As human beings we do things differently than the best way possible because of emotions, subconscious thoughts, early experiences or even imprints, fears, short-term wins and for many, many other reasons. This is what I am interested in my art. When I became interested in arts and started painting (at the age of 9) Surrealism, Pop Art and Photorealism were popular and shown in big exhibitions in Germany: Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Chuck Close, Richard Estes or Ralph Goings. They shaped my early understanding of art. In addition to being an artist, I am also a coach and business trainer. For me, the connection between that and my art is the thinking, communicating, acting and behaving of men and women. The subconscious mind—already an important source in Surrealism—is what leads us. Or as Artur Shopenhauer said: “Man can do what he wants but not want what he wants.” Most of my works deal with the question of why people do what they do. Even if it is not the best for them. Why do they not act right, disciplined and logical?
