This work was inspired by a photograph I saw and immediately wanted to paint. It's named after Johnny from "The Outsiders", one of my favorite books and characters. I'm inspired by Johnny's innocence, purity and selflessness. His love for his friends and looking toward the future with bravery drove the emotion behind this piece. I hope others will feel feelings of humanity and the beauty, understanding and respect for life looking at this piece. I paint in grayscale to reference my graphite, charcoal and drawing roots. I also feel it unites us as one universal human race and allows the focus to be on emotion and storytelling in a face as well as allows me to keep my work cohesive and recognizable as mine. I added color in this piece to reflect that Johnny told Ponyboy it was cool the way he dug sunsets and to "stay gold". The color represents a combination of the background in the end scene with Ponyboy watching the sunset and Johnny's face as he passes on into the next part of life, whatever that may be.
