Painting, Oil on Canvas
Size: 36 W x 48 H x 2 D in
A lifetime fascinated by the depths of the ocean and the possibility of the existence of mermaids, Desiree Ruiz creates a window to this fascinating world we have yet to fully discover. "Just Being a Mother" is a one of a kind, hand painted original oil painting on canvas. Created to make its debut at the Orlando International Airport during Orlando's culturally diverse arts festival "FusionFest", which takes place the weekend after Thanksgiving. It is a heavily textured oil painting, executed with a palette knife and impressionistic brush strokes. "Only 5% of the ocean has been discovered. It's pretty bold to say creatures such as mermaids, or nearly as similar, don't exist. Do we really know that?", is Desiree Ruiz's statement to her everlasting fascination towards mermaids and sirens. "Just Being a Mother" is a narrative telling the subtle story of the yellow mermaid, who's caressing or fixing one of her daughters' hair; such a common act in mothers, symbolic of their many ways of looking after their offsprings. This is the only registered work of art of Desiree that comes with a gift-for-purchase. Included with the painting, comes the initial concept sketch for the piece. Email the artist to learn more. Artwork is currently not on sale for exhibition purposes.

Desiree Ruiz is a Puerto Rican born and raised, self-taught figurative and quartz artist. Her work seeks to shape what has always fascinated her; the hidden. She depicts dream-like scenes embraced by an ethereal, romanticized dark ambiance fueled by the fear yet fascination towards the unknown. She explores the beauty and mysticism of quartz as the most magical and alluring object created by earth along with the figurative presence of women as the most divine figure ever seen. Ruiz plays with themes of existentialism as she draws inspiration from the ideologies and principles of esotericism and the occult sciences, which seek to discover and understand hidden knowledge and existential mysteries through various forms of divination. Each piece challenges the viewer to wonder about things we cannot grasp; the inexplicable, what still has no answer or form to the human mind and what has remained hidden and secret throughout our history when we talk about existence, reality, and the infinite possibilities beyond the material experience. Also a poet, Desiree Ruiz published a Spanish poetry book back in 2018 titled "El Hechizo de la Amapola", which is filled with illustrations made by her own hand.
