About The Artwork

This work is part of the 'Unpredictable change' collection. This collection was inspired by a visit to Mount Etna. These works take inspiration from the pinks, oranges, greys and sage greens in the nature around the volcano. I was attracted by the subtlety of these tones against the dark scenario, under a blue sky. These paintings are the result of months in the studio, of pushing shapes and marks on the canvas whilst allowing experimentation to occur. I played with paint pours while exploring the overlaying of different tones in order to create new rhythms on the canvas.

Working in her studio in London, Rita uses paint to create works inspired by her surroundings and her emotions. While creating abstract images that vary from large to intimate scale, she allows for the creative mark-making process to guide her while creating large and gestural images and layers of colour, which are then combined with small and intimate, selective abstract imagery. She works on the notion of accumulation and disappearance, of surface, depth and fragmentation, while exploring the act of making and unmaking, of construction and deconstruction, addition and subtraction and this notion of painting as a mark that gets left behind, acting as an act of remembrance.
