About The Artwork

FORGETME(K)NOT- Perugia, Italy International Contemporary Art Project Venue: MUSEO DEL RICAMO E DEL TESSILE DI VALTOPINA, Perugia Promoted by: Associazione SCD Textile & Art Studio Italy Synopsis: In August 2023 all beauty salons in Afghanistan were closed on Taliban orders. The ruling is the latest restriction on the rights and freedoms of Afghan women and girls following edicts barring them from education, public spaces and most forms of employment. There was a rare public protest in which dozens of beauticians and makeup artists gathered in Kabul, but security forces broke up the protest using fire hoses and shooting guns into the air. Because of the ban, women not only are not getting their hair and nails done, but 60 000 women lost their jobs and one of the only places they could get support and feel part of community. (Based on ALJAZEERA) Firstly, to make the artwork more authentic the author has invited the hair stylist Vassil Atanassov (Art Director of HCF & Loreal Professionnel Bulgaria) to introduce his interpretation of the theme. He used freshly cut hair from his hair salon as a juxtaposition of what the afghan women do not get anymore. Secondly, as a fashion designer Dimana Nakova made her part of the project in the shape of a wedding gown, which texture resembles natural hair, as a symbol of the most inner and pure dream of a woman. Both parts- hair and a dress are covered with black fabric in order for the viewer to experience how afghan women see and perceive the world. Finally, the artwork extends the matter to a more global perspective, and namely to the interrelation between men and women in general. The needle with a knotted thread and the Love hairpin have been interchanged in order to show that we need to make attempts to understand each other and by means of “COMMUNICATION”, leading to “VOLUNTARINESS”, both catalyzed by love, we could built a more beautiful and fair world.

Dimana Nakova holds a Bachelor's Degree in Fashion & Textile Design from University of Technology Sydney, Australia. During her studies she interned with some Australian fashion designers and worked as a fashion designer assistant and a couture dressmaker for some of the most prestigious bridal boutiques in Sydney. In 2003, Dimana Nakova established her own label IXTYS (https://atelierixtys.com/) and opened a boutique in Sofia/ Bulgaria, Europe. The atelier produced couture wedding and ball gowns, evening and cocktail dresses. Since Spring 2013, Atelier Ixtys has focused on producing of semi-couture collections consisting of going out, cocktail and special occasion dresses. The limited edition collections are made of Italian fabrics and manufactured in Bulgaria. Since Spring 2023, Dimana Nakova has started a whole new approach to her fashion collections for IXTYS and has introduced One-of- a-kind textiles with each one of them. The textile art is meant for interior decorating, but also serves as a starting point and a concept for the created afterwards dresses. If needed, it is further adapted to the care requirements of a garment. The main techniques are hand stitched digital embroidery and beading, 3D. The textiles are originals, One-of- a-kind Artworks. Sustainability It is important for us to think sustainable and make sustainable choices. We make the effort to use excess designer fabrics for at least 90% of our production. Investing in technology, we have brought the embroidery process in our atelier and thus have insured minimal wastage of fabric and thread. Making the embroidery in the atelier requires less courier van transport then before. We use the embroidery threads of Madeira, a winner of The Sustainability Award. Even the smallest fabric remnants left after the cutting and the embroidery process are taken to H&M where they are being recycled.
