During the war with Durgamasura, a demon named Aghora joined the war against Shaktiswaroopa Maa Parvati. For slaying him, Bhagwati Gauri manifested as Devi Prachanda Chandika, along with her attendants Jaya and Vijaya, Prachanda Chandika slew Aghora and his whole army. Seeing the wrath of Devi, the Gods sent Kamadeva and Rati to counter Devi’s wrath with the arrow of love of Kamadeva. When Kamadeva shot the arrow of love at Devi, she grabbed it and shot Kamadev and Rati with it. Kaamdev and Rati, forgetting all things started copulating on the battlefield. The Devi trampled the couple and laughed hoarsely. Meanwhile, Devi’s attendants Jaya and Vijaya were terribly hungry and asked for blood. The benevolent Devi, taking pity on them, severed her head and jets of blood sprouted from her gaping neck drunk by her attendants, while Devi’s severed head also drunk one of the jets. (Renuka tantra) Here, the Devi trampled Kamadeva and Rati, which signifies the trampling of our sexual desires. The Devas mistook Bhagwati to be an ordinary woman, who can be deluded and controlled easily, but she was more than they expected. Kama and Rati are depicted under the Lotus feet of Prachanda Chandika Chinnamasta as it symbolizes that the Goddess is trampling upon the deities of lust, love and youth.
