About The Artwork

I had some small canvases in my studio and I started oblitaring them with chevron marks of different colours. Once finished I thought it would be a good background for a series of semi-nude japanese figures, and I liked the idea of painting colourful kimonos too. I searched for inspiration online but it is while painting them that each figure took a style and character of its own. The work is signed and dated at the back

Marianne Simonin is a French artist who works mostly in oils and charcoals to explore symbolism and the female energy. Her inspiration comes from being mostly attuned to synchronicity and nature.  By connecting with the primordial elements her compositions move beyond landscape reproductions and seek to express emotions or states of mind. The act of walking in nature as one moves step by step along a path, and the awareness of one’s inner world has contributed to her new series on crossroads. I have drawn inspiration from the following artists: Uwe Wittwer (Swiss), Françoise Pétrovitch (French), Celia Paul (UK), Agnes Martin (USA) and Japanese art. My source of references stem from my archive of vintage and personal photos, songs, poems, and meditative states. I use the human figure as a thread to revive emotions and childhood memories, or to make a statement about women that I admire and see as symbols of female energy. My studio is currently in North West London surrounded by a beautiful park which helps me to remain connected with nature.
