About The Artwork

In Greek mythology the function of the labyrinth was to hold the minotaur. The minotaur, often a symbol of the struggle between the natural and unnatural, the civilised and the uncivilised, sits in a fetal position on outsize deflated sunflower-like plants. It has the head of a highland cattle, its vision obstructed, looking a little like Tenniel’s Caterpillar in Alice but facing the viewer. A small cumulus cloud floats above its head, a portend to undefined trouble. The flowers are in a dimly lit undergrowth of hogweed and wild teasel, while the scale, time of day, and meaning are open to interpretation.
