About The Artwork

Les Retrouvailles (Found Memories) Paths intersect. Lives are impacted. Identities evolve. Everything happens for a reason. Seemingly random encounters are anything but random. “To move forward, we have to understand and know where we came from and how we got to any given place in time. Everything is connected…” Background and Reflections: "Les Retrouvailles" represents one's search for meaning as we alternatively try to remember...or to forget. In this work, the figure appears turned in or wrapped around herself. This conceptualization of action, highlighted by the curvilinear linework, presents a pictorial image of our search for meaning and understanding. A large percentage of our identity is founded on our memories - those snapshots and film clips contained only in our mind's eye. Holding onto memories, this woman is working her mind to retrieve more memories - some vital key to her journey. The hope is that its resurgence will bring a positive effect in her present day existence. My art focuses on examining and unraveling the complexity and mystery of human relationships, emotions, and behavior, featuring the individual within or outside of a group dynamic. Are the figures center stage or out of focus? Do they wear a mask? How do they relate to others within the scene? Are they close or connected? Hidden or shielded? In your face or turned away…? In my paintings, layers of color, shape, and my personal calligraphic line palpitate boldly with charged energy or serenely with subtle undertones to weave a story that intrigues, sparks the imagination, and conveys a mood or atmosphere. What is the story and is there more than meets the eye? How does it make you feel? Does a work express intimacy, loneliness, grief, agony, alienation, joy, solidarity, sensuality, conflict, harmony, or mystery? My work explores life and documents my journey: I zoom out or in on an individual, defining their personality or psyche in layers. Note: This painting was painted on unstretched canvas and a framer glued and then mounted it to a panel. Alas, lessons learned: I recommend the collector work with an expert framer to reattach canvas to board and replace the frame with a better quality one. Because the collector will need to re-frame this piece, I did not up-charge for framing. Rather, it is priced as if it were unframed/unstretched. The good news is that since the painting is in a frame, the collector will not have to do this immediately. Thank you!

PHILOSOPHY: In imperfection, lies reality, beauty, and character. As a visual artist, my work examines and responds to the notion of narrative and the interplay between singularity and universality in storytelling. The more personal the story, the more universal its message. Focusing on the imperfect in a world that embraces limited or constrictive definitions of beauty, my goal is to challenge those definitions and perceptions. My hope is that I influence a change of mindset wherein beauty truly is redefined in the eye of each beholder. Unique beauty lies beneath the surface of every individual. - STATEMENT: I create abstract assemblages in shape, color, and line. Finding beauty in the unfinished, my work focuses on relationship dynamics and every-day or chance encounters as they impact identity. With intuition and investigative precision, I explore the energy, motivations, chemistry, and undercurrents between individuals - from the inside, out. My creative process involves building a character in layers, mimicking the way in which identities are formed throughout a lifetime: layer by colorful or complex layer. I let the form and placement of figures and shapes imply subsurface content and emotion. Focused on transience and imperfection, some common themes that run through my work are telling the unknown or hidden stories. - APPROACH: My creative approach parallels my analytical process in that my goal is to try to figure out or resolve challenging situations, encounters, experiences, or relationships. As a result, the beginning phases of new paintings can often appear explosive, congested, chaotic, or seemingly overflowing in conflicting colors and content. These expressionistic elements are integral to the entirety of a piece, providing layers and much of the substrata and undercurrents that need to be emphasized or masked in later stages of the creative process. In later stages my creative process transitions from largely intuitive to a dance between the objective and subjective perspectives in the editing phase, where I construct, deconstruct, reveal, or mask details as needed, weaving a metaphorical interpretation of experiences, while leaving each work enigmatic enough to invite viewers to engage. - FOCUS: My art honors survival and the individual spirit and history of people as they coexist, survive, and interact.
