Anyone who has attempted to fold origami for the first time knows there is a flash point at which they absolutely cannot figure out how to get from one step to the next, especially if the instructions are written in a foreign language. This series celebrates origami forms in these primitive states: symmetrical, abstract and placid. I used partially-folded origami forms as my subjects and painted them in a variety of mediums, including graphite, watercolor and oil.

b. 1983, Minnesota, USA. I love painting. Any medium, any surface, any style. My second love is paper, so it makes sense that I would choose origami paper subjects for my latest series of paintings. These paintings were inspired by my love for paper craft and the challenge of studying values and shapes without the use of color. I grew up in Minnesota, and recently returned after living several years in New York City. My husband is abstract painter Evan Ishmael, and we often collaborate with concepts and ideas for each others' artwork.
