About The Artwork

Formulating a visual picture of a mental concept - conceptualizing the essence. This is what this monochromatic blue painting is to me. My visual rendering of Proust's literary journey into the soul. This painting is on a gallery canvas - the four sides are inscribed (in the same blue) with the following quote from Marcel Proust: "...but the steps of thought we take during the lonely work of artistic creation all lead us downward, deeper into ourselves, the only direction that is not closed to us, the only direction in which we can advance, albeit with much greater travail, toward an outcome of truth... Sounding our depths for discoveries that await us."

In sounding my own depths (an expression used by Marcel Proust in describing the artistic pursuit), I set out to capture colors. Images may or may not emerge. I keep in mind the vividness of Fauvism, the simple shapes and lines of Mondrian and latter Matisse, and the dynamics of expressionists. I have been influenced by de Kooning, the COBRA and Blue Rider groups, Cy Twombly, and Bonnard The painting Lost Time invites the viewer to lose his or her way in thought and time in a simple monochromatic mass. Where images sometimes emerge in my paintings, they are frequently incongruent, contradistinctive, sometimes ironic. In Salmon Migration in Toronto, despite plain, man-made obstacles, the instinct and perseverance of nature prevails. Reflecting on Jeff Coons, is a self-portrait in part (reflection on a shop window).
