About The Artwork

« Lullaby under Crab Nebula »  The new series of paintings « Lullabies for Grown-ups » is based on the idea I found in Tantric philosophy : the Universe itself consists of two Divine beings, a God and a Goddess, making eternal love . The Universe itself is a divine, infinite sexual act. These paintings are inspired by the thought that we are recreating the fundamental act of Universe in a smaller level. Our practical minds are capable to understand the overwhelming truth in the moment of ecstasy. You will find galaxies and supernovas dancing together with loving couples in these paintings. There are delicate flowers and roaring predators which reminds the fragile and dangerous side of passion. Let yourself be transformed by love ! « Lullaby under Crab Nebula » is the second large scale painting in series « Lullabies for Grown-ups ». It was inspired by one of the most beautiful celestial objects : Crab Nebula, the famous, poetic, overwhelming supernova remnant. When I looked at the pattern of galaxies in the Universe and the images of neurons and synapses in my own brain I was struck by their similarity. Everybody who has ever observed them must have had the same feelings I suppose. Then there was this wonderful thought I read somewhere : if a man thinks with neurons in his brain, what if Universe is thinking with its stars and galaxies in his own magnificent time. Every time I look at the images of supernovas I feel they must be connected with passions of the Universe. They are either stars falling in love or stars falling out of love. As Crab Nebula is a supernova remnant it is probably a huge, glorious, breathtaking star falling out of love. May be this is what is left when the passion is over. You can find the scientific information and images about Crab Nebula and I hope you will agree : what is left after the end of love is truly wonderful. There are several loving couples in this painting, both fish and human. When you look at the night sky you will rarely see a single star, usually there is hundreds of visible stars. Love is multifaceted everywhere, under many disguises. The lovers in the foreground communicate the fragile, tender and dangerous side of love. The girl is lying in a heap of blue gladiolus somewhere between bliss and unconsciousness. The strange tatooed man with leopard head, skulls, roses, broken hearts and butterfly wings on his back symbolizes the infinite human possibilities between divinity and beastliness. I love to create an expressive, even dramatic texture in my paintings. They are multilayered. I combine thin layers of transparent color with relief touches with a palette knife to create a rich surface. Each painting begins with a choice of right canvas and making a right gesso for it. For this painting I sew together several pieces of canvas, creating the first layer of different textures. In lower left corner you can still feel the surface of rough canvas that lays underneath multiple layers of color. The story of each painting begins with making a gesso. Each time the recipe is a little bit different as I play with gelatin, chalk and different pigments, creating a second layer of the painting. The composition and the universe of each painting begins a long time before the first touch of color.

My love for printed words is so strong that I make paintings and sculptures from orphaned books. I add different sorts of paper, textile fiber and found objects and treat this mixture as if it was a marble mine. I regard all human-made commodities as the raw material of the 21st century, they add opulence, playfulness and weirdness to my objects. My sculptures are hybrids - installations, huge marionettes and idol figures. I overcome gravity using a technique from marionette theater. Sculptures float in air and strings make them alive. I paint because I'm volatile. I catch all my demons and fears with a brush, so they are not threatening anymore. I'm hesitant, that's why I paint portraits in real time. Models don't have to speak. Sometimes I lay paintings in a horizontal plane, like huge rolls of parchment. The public can touch it, walk and crawl on it, contemplating the importance of daily grounding. I'm a mystic. I borrow deities and create semisacred, eerie spaces where sculptures, paintings, words and animation merge in a numinous, baroque amalgam. I love the tactile. My objects are sensuous to touch. I love word constellations, so there are collections of short stories to accompany the visual work. In a courageous mood, I transform stories into puppet performances and collaborate with theaters and musicians.
