About The Artwork

When the eyes of the person pictured haunt you. They are always directed at you. Wherever you are in the room, the mysterious glances seem to follow you at every turn. Ever since I was a little girl, the fascination of "pursuing gazes" has held me in thrall. Whether I am standing in amazement under Paul Troger's ceiling fresco (1731) in the marble hall of the Melk Abbey Library or in front of the Coptic depiction of the Virgin Mary (12th/13th century) in the Hanging Church in Cairo, the mystery remains the same. The person's gaze is fixed forward, an optical illusion in our brain makes us think we are being followed by the image. The pair of eyes of the observer, however, is permanently readjusted and thus the impression of a continuous eye contact is created. The most famous example is Mona Lisa, who seemingly overlooks every point in the room with a slight silver gaze. As early as 1859, the Frenchman La Gournerie tried to cast the optical effect in mathematical formulas. However, he could not prove exactly what was happening. It is only today that researchers can show that the change in the angle of view has only a very slight influence on the perception of an image. Distant and nearer points remain the same. What does change greatly, however, is the perception of light and dark in plastic objects. The brain treats two-dimensional areas of an object as three-dimensional objects.
