About The Artwork

This is a mythological painting of ancient India where we can see Vishwamitra, sage at left sitting under a tree meditating , one of the most respected and revered sages in ancient India, frightened the Gods and even tried to create another heaven - Indra, as king of god but lower than Devi and Holi Trinity , frightened by his powers, sent Menaka the court dancer of Gods from heaven to earth to lure him and break his meditation. Menaka successfully incited Vishwamitra's lust and passion when he saw her beauty. She succeeded in breaking the meditation of Vishwamitra. However, she fell in genuine love with him and a baby was born to them who later grew in Sage Kanva's ashram and came to be called Shakuntala. Later Shakuntala falls in love with King Dushyanta and gives birth to a child called Bharata after whom India was first named. .This oil painting of Menaka and Vishwamitra sized 24by 36 beautifully depicts the denial of the sage after seeing Shakuntala his child in Menakas lap .He was baffled by seeing this and couldn’t believe in his actions .The eyes of the sage shows the regret and the fire that was blowing in him at that particular point of time .

Hello, I am Soham Biswas ,born in 1997 . I come from a Bengali family in Kolkata which had always served as a root to my passion for art. From my childhood, I have been inspired by the paintings of Raja Ravi Varma which drove me to pursue my journey in this field . My main focus and area of interests when it comes to painting is Hindu mythology and how it is being linked with our present life and society . Painting and drawing became a part of my life ever since I was a little boy and it only propelled to new heights after I started studying fine arts at Birla academy of art and culture. Through rigorous practice, I mastered the techniques of traditional art but it was contemporary art which gave me a voice of my own. Ever since that happened, I have started to see my life in a different perspective .Through contemporary art, I am able to express myself in ways I couldn’t have imagined before. I adopted contemporary art into my practices and slowly developed a style of my own.
