About The Artwork
Last year we'd been lucky to escape to Tuscany for a little break, staying in amazing La Foce, the magical place we adore. One day we drove to dear Siena, the city which we love and know rather well. We parked the car just behind the city walls, walked around a corner, I looked up and that was the view I saw. My very first view of place so dear to my heart, visited again after five years gap. How could you not like those old stones, those walls which witnessed so much through the centuries, absorbed all the weight of history but still are absolutely practical being just part of day to day life, with all that washing outside windows, voices you could overhear, sounds of a lazy Italian lunch indoors. ... All that fabric of history and contemporary life is there, mixed media and acrylic on canvas are my choice of depicting it.

I am Galya Mead, and I am a photographer and an artist nowadays, even though I used to be many other things – an interpreter, a teacher, an art historian. Originally from Russia, for the last 23 years I live in rural England and treasure this land very much. I love life, I love sky and fields, countryside landscapes, animals and architecture. Most of all I like to travel, and we do travel a lot. I look at life through my camera view-finder, taking a break to pause and to express my feelings in my collages, which are strange concoction of mixed media - paper cuts, my own photos, acrylic paint, pastel, charcoal, and chalk on canvases. For me my creations are partly my impressions, partly fragments of music I listen to while working on them. If I could bring that to others, that would make me very happy.
