About The Artwork

This portrait is of 'Momkid' a monkey who lives with a couple in America, who treat her like their daughter. She wears dresses, has toys and even walks the dog. I first became aware of her when I found a story in the Metro free newspaper, and have referenced the images that accompanied the article in numerous paintings. Her life is a great inspiration, she has been adopted without her consent and has been looked after well, so she perfectly embodies our strange push pull relationship with animals. The background was made first and randomly used for this portrait which I made in one sitting as I wanted to retain some energy and positivity in the execution, avoiding the dullness of overworking detail. The result is a little sad, but 'Monkid' retains some dignity I hope. She is painted on a found piece of marine ply and is framed in a glassless box frame, this adds an informal note to the composition. All materials are found or up-cycled from charity shops so as not to stimulate demand for raw materials.
