About The Artwork

Acrylic Portrait on birch panel of Two women connected by their hornet nest head. Delusional Parasitosis is the irrational belief that your body is infested with parasites. The sensation of being covered with crawling insects is a terrifying universal fear. Having lived and learned from depression for well over half my life, I have a strong desire to examine different patterns of thought that reside within the mentally ill. Rumination—the act of chewing one’s cud, or obsessively cycling a thought, was first introduced to me at the age of twelve. My hornets represent the sneaky, persistent, and pervasive thoughts that arrive with depression. Many people struggling with mental illnesses have a certain ambivalence towards their intrusive thoughts. These stinging ruminations can build empathy, compassion, creative inspiration, and curiosity for differences. These thoughts can also hinder ones’ ability to form intimate relationships, build trust and stability, and grow and mature emotionally. www.emilyflint.com

Emily Flint earned a BFA in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design and a BFA in Art Education from the Virginia Commonwealth University. After a brief career teaching art in Richmond Public Schools, she decided to pursue painting. Flint began showing her work in the spring of 2013, and was a recipient of the Best in Show Award at the 2013 Lynchburg Art Festival. She recently returned to the Lynchburg area to live and work in a little cabin on the James River with her bluetick hound, Simon. Obsessive rendering of nature's micro details bring rich symbolism to life in her psychologically disturbing depictions of women in nature. Within her work, Flint deals with fears, the passage of time and loss of youth, physical beauty, and fertility. She is inspired by the natural life that thrives along the James River and Blue Ridge Mountains. www.emilyflint.com www.simonsspots.com
