The Dark Peaks dominate the horizon from where I can see it across the ridge of a valley and it always takes my breath away. The hills speak to me from beyond deep time and are an awesome spectacle to behold. This painting, like others in the series, shows a dark area where it's top edge reveals an undulating horizon line taken form many studies I have personally made in my sketch book. The other bands of painted colour can be interpreted in many ways, but essentially they are expressive emotional responses to the magnificence of this powerful, enigmatic land mass. Finally, the title 'New Land' is a pointer not only to the paintings themselves being a 'new landscape' series, but also the title presents notions about the future, new lands and new opportunities as we move into the next part of the 21st century. My interest in art started at an early age. I remember seeing books at home where I grew up in the 1970's. The books were about impressionism, surrealism and my favourite showed art from the DADA movement. In my teens I became obsessed with Andy Warhol and it was at this point that I realised making art was what I wanted to do. The Paintings you see on my Saatchi Art platform are in chronological order. The first paintings were made in 2018. They were created very precisely and accurately and are influenced by minimalist ideas. Through 2019 my work moved away from minimalist abstractions and started to veer more towards an expressionist style. Through 2020 and going into 2021, I am exploring ideas that attempt to strike a balance between a minimalist mindset and the spontaneity of an expressionist. The paintings are created using acrylic on heavyweight paper and sometimes I use charcoal, graphite and oil pastel. In the next few month I will be starting to execute my larger paintings on canvas.
