About The Artwork

The name Ricky Rat actually originated when my father and step-mother took me to Disney world as a 11 or 12 year old. I remember my dad loosely developing a Mickey Mouse anti-hero of sorts (probably to distract himself from the saccharine surroundings. Unfortunately, he also had an onset of (too much of a good thing) gout upon our arriving in Orlando. *I have since suffered gout as an adult, and i must say, as bad tempered as he became, it was bloody heroic in the circumstances. I'd certainly have been more murderous, possibly opening fire on the Disney Noon Parade My father started out as an anti-apartheid cartoonist during the late 70's and throughout the 80's which were an incredibly tumultuous, violent and bloody time in South Africa. Roundly known as the dangerous cartoonist in South Africa during that period, his biting satire sparing no one... but it was his draughtsmanship that was truly remarkable. Working on this painting, i was really doing something a little similar- using Mickey Mouse as a concept, a metaphor of sorts , well, i suppose as a framing device for the media trope, but it's broader than that of projecting a facade.. one of godly moralism, squeaky clean ethics and genetic elitism. Under which bubbles the reality of encouraged sociopathy, a society in which millionaires are what define success and what it took to get them there is defined as genius. -Lefty Fitzroy 2022
