Opulent Salvation Painting

While I was in Italy, I visited several cathedrals. The magnitude, detail and artistry of these structures were awe-inspiring, but what left an impression on me even more was the overtly apparent corruption & need for wealth & power. The poor were unable to afford bibles or even understand the sermons because they were given in Latin, so to make sure the message of "do as we say & God will bestow blessings upon you or disobey & be sodomized with a fiery spear in the pits of hell & eternal damnation" was abundantly clear, artists painted pictures to convey these concepts. The ideas of buying your way into heaven & being obedient to a master who'd just as easily turn against you, continue to prey on my mind. Knowing that our religious system was founded on anything other than pure love is one thing, but seeing enormous cathedrals lined with gold while the poor were left uncared for & kept in fear, unfortunately reminds me of the separation that still exists. Long story [not so] short, these thoughts [among others] inspired this piece, "Opulent Salvation," where I've imbued the painting with the conflicting dualities. If you watch the time lapse video I posted on my instagram @xorachellondon, you'll see I started with a golden cross, the spilled blood of Christ, tears raining from heaven, etc. When people tell me they can feel my paintings, it is a huge compliment because each one is intentionally woven with conceptual, emotional & energetic layering.
