About The Artwork

This work continues a barely understood compulsion for compositions with a dominant yet unbusy middle, peripheral glimpses of forms in an ambiguous space and featuring specific material qualities developed over years. Acrylic paint washes over and envelops more defined forms, revealing thick, self-levelled textures and underlying layers. The colour scheme was inspired by colours from the fabric of an ironing board cover. Painted using high quality Golden Acrylic paints and texture mediums on heavyweight (15 oz) cotton duck canvas and bespoke box-profile stretcher bars and cross-bars. It has been finished with an acrylic isolation coat followed by a removable, semi-gloss, solvent acrylic varnish and appears unframed with wrap-around paint edges.

“My paintings come from a place inaccessible to my analytical mind. They are the fruits of a root system hidden from view. A kind of sensual arousal stirs me into action and dictates the course of the work thereafter. I listen to what my inner voice whispers and try to respond as spontaneously as I can, without thought to much else. Through my years of experience pushing paint around, I have discovered it is really only this that works and now I trust to the process implicitly. Blind faith in tackling the demands of the moment is required, which can be both exhilarating and unpredictable, but the only way to further the work is to optimize one's relationship with the life within. Identifying and exploring a specific subject is not so important, since anything could be considered worthy of attention, but being true to what one loves is everything. Openness, participation and sharing the thrill of being alive to it all, is what matters most and conveying it as honestly as possible.” © Andy Hill 2018 www.andyhill.art
