About The Artwork

Ohterisms are idioms taken from my non-native (but ancestral home) language of Cyprus and translated into my native English. I wanted to reproduce the feeling and humor when idioms are misinterpreted or miscommunicated by someone who is an “other” in a society. Many are seen as inappropriate or even crude, but they are none-the-less a litmus test for otherness. No matter how well you know a language, you will never truly understand the culture until you understand its idioms. And you can only understand otherisms if you are an "other".

Soteris Phoraris was born in Chicago, Illinois. His childhood was spent between the cities of Chicago and West Lafayette, Indiana. After living as a young adult in Cyprus he returned to West Lafayette to study Fine Arts at Purdue University and was awarded a Bachelors of Arts Degree at the end of 2009. His latest work deals with the intersectionality of images imprinted during childhood, chaos theory and the active competition between the constructed image and visual culture's oversaturation of the manufactured/artificial image.
