About The Artwork

Dance of the water Spirit is inspired by Yibo koko's production of the 'seki dance' drama.. seki dance is a highly colourful dance by the Ijaw people of the oil rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria, South South. Yibo koko traces the the American tap dance to the dance of the water spirit practiced by slaves from the Niger delta. The dance is a reenactment of the rich and colourful dance of the water spirit (masquerades) in the form of fish, birds and crocodiles. It is a tradition which has been passed from generation to generation but which seems to be dying out due to acculturation. . A painting cannot truly capture the true essence of the theatrical performance put up by Yibo, but by doing this painting I hope to appreciate his good work through this visual documentation of the interaction between man and spirit as celebrated widely in Ijaw land and many other African cultures.
