About The Artwork

Inspired by my hometown London, I seem to always come back to it. Having moved away I have the privilege of viewing it from afar, critically wholeheartedly with nothin less than true passion and love. Within these paintings I cover topics close to my heart and which I find important. These are usually social issues and commentary that have affected me and my friends and the fast paced society which we live in. The process is clearly just as important as the end result, using mainstream, easily accessible materials. And it is this process that is fundamental to each piece and tells a strong visual narrative.

Freddie Thomas is an artist, born in Belvedere, London. She is currently working with textiles and uses a sewing machine as a social commentary tool, like a machine gun attacking the material at sometimes 800 stitches per minute. Freddie likes to mirror society in her work discussing topics OTHERS choose to ignore. She is fearless in her approach and quite happy to ruffle a few feathers. In 2015 she graduated with MFA in Painting from Edinburgh University, where she taught herself technically how to sew. And it is this exact process that is fundamental to her art practice. Creating her own rules, techniques, and methods rather than follow any set manual or status quo. This method that adds layers, vibrancy, uniqueness and dimensions to her work. Freddie’s work has punch and a strong visual language, which the viewer either loves or hates. Having studied her Painting Degree at LaSalle College of Art in South East Asia, she has deliberately chosen to take her own pathway far different from many UK art graduates. And this is why she stands out from the crowd. It is no wonder her artwork deliberately moves away from the consciously fashionable, and sophisticated. Instead deliberately using mainstream and affordable materials – glitter, acrylics, spray paint, textiles, pencil’s, and office paper. And it is this, which is the very essence of her artwork.
