This is a combination of Robert Campin’s Madonna and Child from 1428 that’s in the Stadel Museum in Frankfurt and a photo I took of a homeless man’s mattress/set up on the streets of Madrid Spain. It was created through countless layers of paint to allow the images to fuse. The juxtaposition of a maternal nurturing figure and the pedestrian passing by is at the heart of this work. The themes in this series aim to create a platform to investigate our place within the wider cultural and emotional landscape focusing on identity, memory, nostalgia, and narratives that glorify the individual subject as well as the connections to others and place. They highlight the juxtaposition between subject and place with some connections to powerful women in art history. These works are created in oil and form puzzling double exposures.
