About The Artwork

In summers I saw the sheep on mountains, peaks, meadows, rivers. The woman made of rock is a nest, teaching me of the air, the resting place under trees and nothingness. I hear the silence of the mid-day Sun to the same degree as the silence of the Moon at night. The night is clear, sharp and frightening. The afternoon is yellow – barren – clear – sleepy – beautiful and as frightening and lonely as the night.

Ulisa Dekaj is a Canadian-Albanian artist, based in Toronto. She holds a BA from OCADU. Her work is dealing with matters of the psyche with an emphasis on human emotion. Looking within as well as hearing the stories of others, she constructs emotional landscapes of joy, sadness, contentment, fear, grief and gratitude. Visually, inspiration is drawn from idealized childhood memories. “Vast, flat, sunny places, awe-inspiring mountains, white Mediterranean walls at noon, large flat rocks by rivers. I place my subjects in these landscapes and they become the cradle of all the emotions. This is a way for me to remember the magic of life all around us and share it back with the world.”
