About The Artwork

My wife and I love to travel, wherever we go I make time to either draw or paint. One beautiful day during or visit to Southern California we took a drive along the coast north of San Diego. Thoughts of Constables and Stobart’s coastal paintings were on my mind as each turn in the road we were offered up more and more of the gorgeous scenery of coastal California. Then we stumbled upon this scene, an incredible view from Point La Jolla. Looking down from those rocky cliffs there was a dazzling array of colorful blues in the ocean. In contrast with the stunning rocky cliffs of rich warm earthy colors of the shoreline. It was early evening, and a bit hazy. A cool breeze was coming in from the Pacific Ocean. There were waves crashing along a rocky point off to our left. Seagulls flew overhead and directly below us we could see a deep blue tidal pool. Up the shore and across the cove, ropes of waves were rolling in. Some crashed onto a large sea shelf yards from the shore, covering it with a blanket of white foam. The whites sparkled like jewels with colorful notes of pale yellowish greens and blueish grays. The cliffs were dotted with green patches of coastal sage scrubs. From a distance some of the scrubs created the illusion of stairs leading down from the cliff tops to the water’s edge. As the coastline wrapped around the cove and faded northward out of view, a colorful misty haze of pale oranges and reds could be seen.
