About The Artwork
On the morning of 24th August AD 79 the giants stirred and mount Vesuvius began raining down volcanic ash and pumice upon the city of Pompeii. The historian Cassius Dio, writing later, describes how giants were seen roaming the land. It was believed at the time that when the gods had defeated the giants they buried them beneath the mountains and when the giants roared the mountains erupted.
