This is a portrait of Mary Nolan, a stage and film actress, singer and dancer who began her career as a popular Ziegfeld Girl in the 1920's. A luminous beauty who had a tumultuous life, I was inspired by her expressive face to create this painting in my version of the dramatic Hollywood illustrations and portrait style of the era. Based loosely on an old black and white photo, I created a painterly background of deep peacock blue to offset her golden tones. She is soft and delicate but I am also pleased to have kept the brushwork loose and spontaneous throughout this painting. There is a haunting, soulful quality to this lovely lady that transcends time.

I have been drawing and making art in some form since I was four years old. I was born in Washington DC but, as the daughter of an American diplomat, spent much of my childhood in Japan, Korea, and Hawaii. I studied art at Parsons School of Design and afterwards traveled to Europe to learn from the masterpieces in the great museums of London, Paris, Rome and Florence. I studied oil painting at a private atelier in Lisbon and had my first solo exhibit there. My work is in numerous collections throughout the United States and Europe. I currently reside in Arlington Virginia, just across the river from Washington DC.
