About The Artwork

We are all witnesses to events we experience personally and live through in the time period that occurs during our lifetimes. How we digest, comprehend, record, and speak out to others about events that impact and affect the survival and humanity of not only ourselves but to all of us that remains a significant, ethical question and dilemma. The life and writings of Elie Wiesel inspired me to create this artwork. He heroically represented the positive human spirit as a recorder and survivor of a human catastrophe documenting the ultimate level of organized nationalistic, societal inhumanity and brutality, that can be engineered, invented and systematically thrust upon innocent people out of fear and irrational stereotypes because of their difference of religion, culture and traditions. This portrait captures his face that had lived, seen, absorbed, witnessed the horrors and death of a people, but in life he rose beyond and retained his personal, ethical and moral dignity, enormous sensitivity, depth of compassion, and incredible literary ability to put into words what he witnessed and remembered.
