About The Artwork

This painting depicts a glamorous woman in a sleeveless, mermaid-style dress standing next to a little girl, who is sitting cross-legged on a rose-colored blanket, holding a stuffed bunny. The little girl is smiling at the viewer. The mother is smiling, coyly at the viewer, as if they share a secret; she is glamorous and sexy, which contradicts the idea of the wholesome, happy little girl. Drips from the mother's dress run down from her high-heeled shoes. Drips run up from the ambiguous pink landscape-like mass behind them. While the daughter and the space are warm and rosy colored, the woman is painted in cold hues. The piece is entitled, "Rose-Tinted Glasses" to further suggest a disconnect between the mother and daughter.

My work is an investigation of the human psyche, as relates to dreams, memory, and reverie. I am interested also in family systems--their various forms and definitions--using techniques that include layering, fragmentation and appropriation to undermine familiar narratives relating to socially accepted views of the family and its functions. I hope to raise questions on the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder and other types of psychological scarring that may result from war, forced relocation, imprisonment and violent conflict; specifically, how these events may mutate or infect subsequent generations, shaping the psychological underpinnings of the family system, that serve as the motivating factors, conscious or unconscious, of the human psyche. https://www.stephanie-j-ryan-artist.com/ https://www.facebook.com/stephaniejryan.artist, http://www.artslant.com/global/artists/show/233188-stephanie-j-ryan,
