STUDY 1 Painting

“STUDY ONE” is an experimental work in a technique that I developed and have never seen before. The artwork is a natural progression from the impasto style of my earlier paintings and my attempts to create a more three dimensional artwork effect. The method places the painted artwork off the “canvas” and literally places it in three dimensional space. The 12”W x 43”H x 8”D painting/sculpture is produced by filling bottles with two part model airplane paint. The 12” square “canvas” mounting board that holds the bottles is inverted onto a sheet of Polypropylene set at an angle enabling the paint to drain out and flow down the PP sheet and around clear, acrylic, geometric shapes. Light from behind glows through these crystals. As the paint dries it shrinks off the PP and twists to form the final artwork. The airplane model paint is very brittle so a reinforcing layer of an industrial two part epoxy is applied and painted over the backside of the artwork. This two material assembly creates an interesting effect caused by changes in ambient temperature and humidity. The painting/sculpture artwork actually changes shape due to atmospheric changes which makes it curl and change.
