STUDY 2 Painting

“STUDY TWO” is an experimental work in a technique that I developed and have never seen before. The method, similar to STUDY ONE presents the painted surface in three dimensional space off the “canvas” mounting board. The 14”W x 46”H x 10”D "painting/sculpture" is produced by filling bottles with a two part paint used on model airplanes in a range of paint dilutions. The 12” square mounting board holding the bottles is inverted onto a sheet of Polypropylene set at an angle. The angled surface is heavily sprayed with a coating of silicone. As the thin paint drains over the PP/silicone surface, the silicone repels the paint in a lacy pattern. As the paint dries it shrinks, curls and twists to form the final artwork. The lacy areas and body of the artwork are reinforced by the application of an industrial two part epoxy applied over, and painted to, the backside of the artwork. The airplane model paint is very brittle so the reinforcing layer, besides strengthening the artwork, creates an interesting dynamic effect caused by changes in temperature and humidity. The "painting/sculpture" artwork actually shape-adapts due to atmospheric conditions.
